Christopher P. Lu is Assistant to the President and Cabinet Secretary for President Obama. As the Cabinet Secretary, Chris Lu is President Obama’s primary liaison to the federal departments and agencies, helping to coordinate policy and communications strategy. Lu has worked for President Obama in a variety of capacities over the years, serving as Legislative Director and, later, as Chief of Staff for Obama’s U.S. Senate Office, as well as Executive Director of the Obama-Biden Transition Project. He is also co-chair of the White House Initiative on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.
In the U.S. Senate, Lu guided then-Senator Obama’s legislative agenda through Congress, working to pass landmark ethics, transparency, and non-proliferation legislation. As Executive Director of the transition effort, Lu oversaw the day-to-day operations of an organization that has been recognized by outside observers as one of the best-run presidential transitions in recent history.
From 1997 to 2005, Lu worked for Rep. Henry Waxman as Deputy Chief Counsel of the Democratic staff of the House Government Reform Committee. A magna cum laude graduate of Princeton University and a cum laude graduate of Harvard Law School, Lu also has been an attorney in private practice and a law clerk to a federal court of appeals judge.
